Fight the Powah, Brotha!

First, there was the Magna Carta.
Then, there was the UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights.
Now, there's The Declaration of the Rights of a Husband Gamer.

We must all rise up and defend our fundamental right to play Grand Theft Auto IV, by all critics' measures the most perfect video game of all time.

Genius

It's rare that I get wistful about high school, despite the fact I really came into my own, traveled the world and met some of my best friends there, but this senior prank makes me proud (as official cartoonist of the Lincoln Underground newspaper thrice threatened with suspension) be a Licoln alum. WTG Cardinals!

Let's See How Long it Takes for This One to Die

Barney Frank and Ron Paul Sponsor the "Make Room for Serious Criminals Act," which would stop federal prosecution of marijuana smoking (thus leaving it solely to the states to decide legality). This would also prevent the government from literally making it a federal case when a person prescribed medical marijuana actually uses it. Revolutionary, I know. A quote I found particularly appealing, and indicting of the Big Daddy Government world we live in:

" To those who say that the government should not be encouraging the smoking of marijuana, my response is that I completely agree. But it is a great mistake to divide all human activity into two categories: those that are criminally prohibited, and those that are encouraged. In a free society, there must be a very considerable zone of activity between those two poles in which people are allowed to make their own choices as long as they are not impinging on the rights, freedom, or property of others. I believe it is important with regard to tobacco, marijuana and alcohol, among other things, that we strictly regulate the age at which people may use these substances. And, enforcement of age restrictions should be firm. But, criminalizing choices that adults make because we think they are unwise ones, when the choices involved have no negative effect on the rights of others, is not appropriate in a free society."

Despite the fact this would reduce overcrowding in our criminally (hehe) overpopulated jails and reduce trial times in our overbooked courts, I predict a new casualty in "The War on Drugs," because we simply don't seem to believe in adulthood anymore. Remember, pot makes horrible criminals out of us all. Just look at the chaos here in Oregon! Pot has caused incalculable damage to the cookie and chip populations, and led to rampant slouching and giggling at nothing. Up with hope, down with dope!

12...I mean, 6 Steps to a Better USA

A thoughtful article by Glenn Beck. It's interesting to see something in this election-crazed time of the year that's not about parties, but about good politics. I'm finding myself disagree more and more sharply with the protectionist/isolationist economic agenda coming from pols like Hillary (and even my man Obama), and the wishy-washy open ended commitment to a war of unfathomable cost on the other.

Is it so impossible to believe that we could actually have a political entity that looked at things and said "this is fucking crazy...let's hear what the economists have to say about free trade and how it may or may not create higher-paying jobs in the states, and what the pitfalls of universal care and Social Security are without jingoism, and how we're going to deal with climate change before it's too late, and what the war is going to cost us and for how long particularly without Iraq actually paying toward their own recovery...and make decisions based on THAT." I have a feeling/hope that Obama is that sort of guy - certainly, more of that guy than anyone else running - who could actually be a well-reasoned moderate and work with the right people to make things happen. Hilldawg tried to hit him on his advisors' statements he may not be 100% against NAFTA, and that he will make a realistic estimate on a drawdown/pull out of Iraq based on data he does not have access to as a candidate - both positions I would applaud him for if they were true. He has shown this sort of judgement with the way he's handled the race/Wright scrum - brave, honest, and well-balanced - so I'd like to project that judgement to other decisions he'd make as president.

But this is not an Obama post. Cause if there were someone I *knew* would be that sort of well-reasoned guy/gal - you know, the types of pols from the pre-Nixon era - they'd have my vote in a second. That, and if they didn't hide behind the skirts of their surrogates, that'd be another one in the plus column.

Don't Forget! The Surge is Working!

Yes, she's digging rice out of the gutter while an Iraqi soldier smiles like a fucking douche in the background. Good work, guys.

Yep, nobody starving or dying there...Who's facing the crisis of credibility now, Joe Leiberman?
